‘Beetlejuice’ returns, but was it necessary?

It’s been over 30 years since Tim Burton summoned “Beetlejuice” to the big screen with a star-studded cast.

After saying his name three times, everyone’s favorite snarky ghost is back for a brand-new saga.

“The sequel has been so heavily promoted, like ‘Deadpool and Wolverine,'” Scott “Movie” Mantz pointed out while on the KTLA 5 Morning News.

Reviews for the movie are in and so far it’s received a 76 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

Scott caught the film on Tuesday night and “wasn’t crazy about it.”

“Michael Keaton is great, he still has the juice and there are moments when it captures the inventive zaniness of the original film with a lot of crazy callbacks,” he explained.

About an hour in, he was unsure of the story’s plotline. Our movie critic felt that the sequel “didn’t have a reason to exist.”

“What’s the purpose?” he asked. “The story took a while to get going and I was kind of bored!”

Scott commended the film’s “visual effects, the hair, makeup and wardrobe.”
“All of that is amazing of course, as expected,” he exclaimed. “But it just didn’t capture the magic of the original. It felt like a pale comparison of the original film and it doesn’t measure up.”

“Look, sometimes you get a sequel that is above and beyond, better than the original. Of course, I’m going to mention ‘Top Gun: Maverick,’ I’m still obsessed with that movie.”

Scott praised how the “Top Gun” sequel furthered the storyline, something that “Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” fails to do.

“It didn’t go to another level, like ‘Maverick’ did. This feels like it’s walking the same line.”

He did tout the nostalgia of seeing Michael Keaton, Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder reprise their roles for the film.

Overall he felt “disappointed” by the film.

Scott believes that the movie will be enjoyable for those who have never seen the original film and the younger generation being introduced to “Beetlejuice” for the first time, especially Jenna Ortega’s character.

“Beetlejuice Beetlejuice” hits theaters Sept. 6.
