Ben Stiller and Bill Hader Returned to SNL to Roast the Cohen Hearing
Michael Cohen’s congressional testimony snatched headlines all week long, so it was practically inevitable that the proceedings would be parodied in a star-studded Saturday Night Live cold-open. Frequent guest star Ben Stiller returned to play the beleaguered former Trump fixer, while SNL alum Bill Hader appeared as a frothing-at-the-mouth Jim Jordan.
Kenan Thompson played House Oversight Committee Chairman Elijah Cummings. "For any other president, this hearing would be the most damning and humiliating moment of their lives," he said, opening the proceedings. "But for Trump, it’s just Wednesday."
In SNL's take on Cohen's opening statement, Stiller reminded the committee that this congressional testimony wouldn't like his last. "Of course, the first time I testified was also under oath," said Stiller. "But this time I, like, really mean it."
"I’m here today to tell you that Mr. Trump is a racist," he said, adding a dramatic pause and surveying his unsurprised audience. "Wow, I thought that would be a bigger reaction."
"But now, I’m all out of faith," Cohen concluded his statement. "This is how I feel. I’m cold and I’m ashamed, lying naked on the floor. Illusion never changed into something real. I’m wide awake and I can see the perfect sky is torn, thank you."
Hader sputtered admirably as a Jones who's "angry at everyone but the president," but castmember Kyle Mooney stole the sketch as Arizona Rep. Paul Gosar-you know, the guy whose own siblings made a commercial for the person who ran against him-and his dumb "Liar, Liar" sign.
Weekend Update continued to skewer Cohen hearings, with Colin Jost offering the perfect description of what it feels like to reluctantly root for an admitted slimeball Cohen.
Okay so, this is weird, but did you guys see this picture online of a chubby sewer rat that got stuck in a manhole? It’s this creature that usually seems gross, but under these circumstances it’s kind of adorable and you almost feel sorry for it. That’s how I felt about watching Michael Cohen testify in congress.
