Berlin: Jennifer Aniston Starring in Indie Drama ‘Cake’
Jennifer Aniston has come on board to star in the movie “Cake” with Daniel Barnz directing in the first title of a five-film co-financing pact between After Dark Films and China-based TV producer Shenghua Entertainment.
Conquistador Entertainment is handling international sales at Berlin.
The co-finacing pact, operating as Cinelou Films, calls for production of the five films in the $7 million to $10 million range over the next 18 months. Courtney Solomon (“An American Haunting”) will produce the films, which will be in the dramatic, dark comedy and thriller genres.
Cinelou is repped by WME Global, which will assist in the sourcing and packaging of the films. The deal was put together by Solomon and South China Media, under a new production venture between Solomon and Mark Canton.
“Cake” is based on a Black List script by Patrick Tobin. Aniston will star as an acerbic woman who becomes fascinated by the suicide of another woman in her chronic pain support group. As she uncovers the details of the suicide, she also grapples with her own personal tragedy.
Aniston also will executive produce the film. Ben Barnz, Kristin Hahn (“The Departed”) and Solomon will produce, and Shyam Madiraju and Canton will executive produce.
Solomon said “The formation of Cinelou Films DHJ, and this new venture with Shenghua is a unique pact which allows us to give great projects a chance to be made for the right reasons without many of the usual limitations put on indie films.”
The deal for “Cake” was negotiated by CAA and WME Global who are repping the film together, and Scott Karol, on behalf of Cinelou and Conquistador.
