Best moments of ‘Survivor 47’ episode 1: 3 new tribes, 2 hidden immunity idols and 1 brutal elimination
The premiere episode of “Survivor 47” aired on Wednesday night, concluding with host Jeff Probst snuffing out the torch of Jon Lovett. The 42-year-old from Los Angeles, California was the first castaway sent home after being voted out by the Gata tribe. But did they make the right decision? And what were the dumbest, most shocking, and most exciting moments of this inaugural episode of the season?

Top 5 Moments of Episode 1:
1. An Exciting New Cast: After two seasons with strong personalities, the casting department has nailed it again, bringing in some truly intriguing contestants for the Gata, Lavu, and Tuku tribes. I found myself rooting for them all, but there were a few contestants that stood out to me. Jon Lovett seemed like a genuine person whose job experience could really benefit him (sadly he went home first). Teeny Chirichillo stands out for being such a likable, sociable person. Bonus — each tribe had to compete almost immediately, which is always a fun bonding tool as they ran an obstacle course for camp supplies. Gabe Ortis looked especially strong during this challenge, and just might be the quickest runner of the bunch.
2. 3 Tribes Bond: The members of Gata got along right off the bat and the Toku members seemed to as well…even if they were very aware puzzles are not their expertise. Sue Smey and Caroline Vidmar quickly emerged as my favorites there. Terran “TK” Foster also impressed me. The Lavo tribe didn’t seem concerned that they lost the challenge, and instead embraced the chaos. Kishan Patel might be the best player on that tribe in terms of social interaction, even if Rome Cooney quickly became popular before he turned people off by becoming an idol hunter.
3. Two Approaches to Advantage Hunting: Gabe found a Beware Advantage and quickly recruited TK to help him (after getting caught). TK was not buying Gabe’s “I found this key” excuse, so Gabe had to thread lightly and bide his time before opening the box. He also opted to loop Sue in the mix as well, which felt like too many cooks in the kitchen. He received an immunity idol, but was offered a chance to compete for a longer lasting one. A choice that felt a bit foolish, but was successful. When presented with yet another challenge, he opted not to, which was smart. Rome also found a Beware Advantage, but handled the situation much more covertly — a side quest in the dead of night. Unfortunately, he got caught in the light of day, which just made him look shady. At the end of the day, mission successful…but not a good look and now there’s a target on his back.
4. The First Immunity Challenge: In this brutal first challenge, the three tribes went to war. We also learned that piloting a boat is more of a challenge than one might expect. Andy Rueda needed medical attention, which made things even more dramatic. In the end, Gata lost and was sent to tribal council.
5. The First Cut is the Deepest: With Andy the obvious choice to go, there didn’t seem like there would be much to discuss. But even his apology felt a bit odd. You need validation for cutting a coconut and being a warm body? This is not the show for you, sir. Jon was told he was a fake target, but decided to point his finger at Anika, hoping he could rally votes to oust her. Sadly, Jon’s duplicity was more of an issue for Gata and he was sent packing first. Moral of the story here? Don’t play too hard too fast.
