Beyoncé Knowles-Carter and Kelly Rowland made appearances at Vice President Kamala Harris’ Houston rally on Friday.
The two former members of Destiny’s Child were introduced by Beyoncé’s mom, Tina Knowles, as the duo entered the rally to the group’s song “Independent Women.”
“Welcome to this day, this remarkable, this joyous day,” Rowland said during the rally. “A moment, Houston, where we grab back the pen from those who are trying to write an American story of division and hatred.”
“A moment when we grab back the pen from those who are trying to write an American story of misogyny and racism,” she said. “We are grabbing back the pen from those who are trying to write an American story that would deny the right for women to make our own decisions about our bodies.” Rowland encouraged “grabbing back the pen“ to write a new American story with the Democratic nominees for the 2024 presidential election.
Rowland shared that she voted for Vice President Kamala Harris and Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz.
Beyoncé pushed for the importance of voting and said it is the most valuable tool and right.
“I'm here as a mother,” she said. “A mother who cares deeply about the world my children and all of our children live in.”
“Your vote is one of the most valuable tools, and we need you,” she said. “Your freedom is your God given right, your human right.”
With a nod to her career, Beyoncé told the crowd to write a new American song.
“It's time for America to sing a new song,” she said. “Our voices sing a chorus of unity. They sing a song of dignity and opportunity.”
