Beyonce Shares Statement On North Carolina’s House Bill 2
North Carolina remains the center of controversial legislature following the state’s support of House Bill 2, which dismisses the protection of LGBTQ people in restrooms in public and school facilities based on their gender identity and other anti-LGBTQ laws in the Tar Heel state’s cities.
Major corporations from the NBA to prominent artists have made it their mission to cancel appearances or any business dealings in the southern state. But Beyonce still performed in Raleigh on Tuesday (May 3) to not only fulfill fans’ desires of seeing her live, but to share a moving message on supporting orgs that plan to overturn the bill.
The statement that’s published on Bey’s website details the original mandate that was in place to be approved by NC’s politicians. “It all began earlier this year when Charlotte passed a decree expanding North Carolina’s anti-discrimination laws allowing LGBT people protection in places of public accommodation.”
The passage later reads that since the officials decided to vote against the aforementioned decree, “legislators returned to the state house to overrule the ordinance that would ban discrimination against LGBT people. At a special session, North Carolina’s General Assembly proposed and passed the House Bill 2 (HB2) — what has now come to be known as the ‘Bathroom Bill.’”
The “Formation” singer called on her fans to take charge to get those in power to repeal the current bill’s standing. She also praised the Equality NC group for remaining steadfast in sustaining the rights of LGBTQ people.
“To accomplish these goals, Equality NC tirelessly lobbies the North Carolina General Assembly, executive branch, and local governments, broadcast LGBT news, stories and content, and mobilize our communities on issues that matter, including marriage equality, parental rights, inclusive anti-bullying policies, employment discrimination, hate violence, privacy rights, sexuality education, adoption, domestic partnerships, and HIV/AIDS.”
