Bill Maher Isn't a Fan of 'Fetish Patriotism'
American patriotism doesn't seem that weird, until you get a look at pretty much any other country. We're some of the only folks in the world who feel the need to have our nation's flag hanging outside our homes, for example. And playing the national anthem before domestic sporting events? You guessed it, we're pretty alone in that too.
Our singular obsession with a particularly masturbatory form of patriotism is usually just one of our many charming/terrifying national quirks, but these days it's also big news, thanks to the NFL players who've elected to take a knee during the anthem and to the president who's decided to turn the most benign and unobtrusive protest possible into a global news story.
On Real Time Friday Night, Bill Maher mused over the myriad ways patriotism makes Americans get all tingly, saying that, "For conservatives, the anthem is their senior prom theme song. It makes them all misty-eyed the way I get when I hear the Captain and Tennille’s "Do That to Me One More Time." Check out the segment below.
