Billy Dee Williams Weighs in on Carrie Fisher and Harrison Ford's On-Set Star Wars Romance

In what’s likely a surprise to no one, Billy Dee Williams—whose turn as Lando Carlrissian in Star Wars made him one of the most memorable sweet-talking, cool-as-hell action movie stars—is still just as cool after all these years.
For Esquire’s Winter issue, we talked to the 82-year-old legend in advance of his reprisal of Lando in this December’s Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker. And considering the interview happened over the course of a boozy four-hour-long dinner with the actor, the conversation was appropriately galaxy-ranging—covering Lando’s future in the Star Wars franchise, off-screen passions, and how Williams got so damn cool in the first place.
The interview, of course, eventually turned to his Star Wars co-stars—namely Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher, who played Han Solo and Princess Leia in the original Star Wars trilogy alongside Williams. He briefly commented on Ford and Fisher’s three-month-long affair on the set of the first Star Wars, which Fisher described in her memoir, The Princess Diarist (an account Fisher later said she regretted telling publicly).
“As far as I’m concerned, I mean, I don’t care what people are—if they’re fucking each other and they’re sucking each other, whatever they’re doing, that’s fine with me," Williams said. “I don’t care.”
Later in the interview, Williams discussed his famed character's brief betrayal of Han, Luke and Leia in the original trilogy.
“He was up against Darth Vader,” Williams said. “I don’t blame him for what he did.”
