Bindi Irwin addresses if she plans to have more children: ‘Be careful when you ask this question’
Bindi Irwin is opening up about whether she and husband Chandler Powell plan to expand their family.
In a Q&A video published by the Australia Zoo YouTube channel on Aug. 28, the couple addressed a question they say they’re asked daily: “Are you two planning on having another child?”
“Bindi, a lot of you may already know, she went through a big journey with endometriosis. And basically it was an absolute miracle that we had Grace,” Powell said in response, referring to their 3-year-old daughter.
The couple welcomed Grace Warrior Irwin Powell on March 25, 2021, the same day as their wedding anniversary. Powell explained that they're savoring precious time with their little one.
“We love Grace so much and are reveling in every little moment we have with her, with our little miracle baby,” he said. “So we are so happy with our little family at three.”
Irwin, the daughter of legendary crocodile hunter Steven Irwin, said she is grateful for the interest in her family, but gave a reminder to be mindful.
"I really appreciate everybody who’s curious to see if we will have another child, but I do just want to send it out there that remember to be careful when you ask this question because you never know what’s happening in someone’s life,” Irwin said.
She continued, “In a family’s world, everything may seem fine on the outside, and on the inside, their own personal journey might have been filled with turmoil and challenges that you can’t even fathom.”
Though she noted the “kindness and good intent” behind the inquiry, “it’s also a really tricky question for many, many people who maybe can’t have another baby (or) can’t have a baby at all.”
“We feel very lucky to have Grace,” Irwin continued. “She is our beautiful girl, but she will probably be our one child."
Irwin added, “Maybe we will be blessed with another little one down the road. That would be incredible. But who knows?”
While Powell nodded along in agreement, Irwin clarified that she dislikes using the word “only” when referring to their toddler.
“Grace is our child,” Irwin said. “She is our one beautiful, perfect, amazing little girl. And, oh my goodness, every single day I think about how lucky we are to have her.”
In March 2023, Irwin shared her endometriosis diagnosis in an Instagram post. At the time, she revealed she had 37 endometrial lesions and a cyst removed.
The condition, which the U.S. Department of Health & Human Services says impacts 11% of women between ages 15 to 44, causes tissue typically found in the lining of the uterus to grow elsewhere in the body. Symptoms can include abdominal pain, gastrointestinal issues, heavy periods, bloating and infertility, among others.
In the same post, she requested that people stop asking about her plans to have more children.
“Please be gentle & pause before asking me (or any woman) when we’ll be having more children,” she wrote, alongside a picture of her in a hospital bed.
