Nicole Kidman Pays Tribute to Her 'Calm, Wise, Self-Restrained, and Generous' Father

Nicole Kidman, with husband Keith Urban by her side, remembered her late father, Antony Kidman, at his funeral on Friday. The actress called her dad a devoted family man who always supported her, especially when she was going through her high-profile divorce from Tom Cruise.

At the service held at St Francis Xavier Church in Sydney, the Grace of Monaco actress, 47, put on a brave face to eulogize the 75-year-old clinical psychologist, who died of a suspected heart attack in Singapore last week. She spoke after her mother, Janelle, shared her memories of "Tony," calling him a man with "helpless, infectious laughter."

"I am one of the lucky ones," Nicole told the group of mourners, according to the Sydney Morning Herald. "I am a girl, a woman, raised by an extraordinary man," whom she described as a gentleman, friend, confidante, and protector. "He was calm, wise, self-restrained, and generous. What more could you wish for in a father?"

One of the moments she most felt his protection was in 2001 as her marriage to Cruise broke up and she suffered a miscarriage. "He was on the plane hours after I got divorced," Kidman — who was accompanied by Urban and their two daughters, Sunday and Faith — told the crowd. "He came to stay with me, looking after me for weeks."

Nicole also talked about how Tony — who had a distinguished career and was awarded an Order of Australia for his contributions to clinical psychology — was down to earth and not into the material comforts that her Hollywood lifestyle provides. A story she shared, through tears, was how he refused to accept a car that she wanted to buy him.

"I'd send him a Prada shirt and he wouldn't even look at the label," she said. "He didn't notice."

Nicole's younger sister, Antonia Marran, also spoke, sharing with the crowd how Tony filmed the births of five of her six children.

Country singer and American Idol judge Urban took part in the 90-minute Jesuit service as well, playing guitar and leading the group in a rendition of "Amazing Grace." He was also a pallbearer. The couple's older daughter, 6-year-old Sunday, delivered one of the funeral's most heart-wrenching moments when she and her cousin spoke about their grandfather.

"We will miss you," the two young girls said. "You were so kind, you were so cute, you took us to the zoo, you took us to your work, and we love you. We know you're in heaven."

Other attendees included Kidman pal Russell Crowe, who was there with his estranged wife, Danielle Spencer. The Noah star also served as a pallbearer. Nicole's two adult children with Cruise, with whom she has a distant relationship, didn't appear to be in attendance.

Outside the church after the service, Kidman broke down in tears. However, she was comforted by her daughters — Sunday gave her mother a huge hug — and Urban doted on his wife, giving her a kiss.

Tony died last Friday while having breakfast at an exclusive country club, Tanglin Club, in Singapore. He was in town visiting Antonia, who lives there with her banker husband and six children. Officials opened an investigation into his death, which they dubbed "unnatural," but in Singapore that often refers to falls or other accidents. Nicole's publicist and friend Leslee Dart told Yahoo that the actress and her family were "in shock" over the "sudden death of her father," adding, "She appreciates the outpouring of support and kindly requests privacy during this very difficult time."
