Borderlands Closes Theatrical Run with $32 Million
Borderlands was slammed in early reactions, called "a complete mess, "baffling", and "dull", which resulted in a sour rating of 53% on Rotten Tomatoes from audiences and an even worse rating of 10% from critics who called the film "a lifeless cash grab that doesn't respect itself or the audience."
Now Borderlands is already getting a digital release following a shocking performance at the box office, where it barely scraped back a third of its $115 million budget, making just $15.4 million domestically, with a further $17.2 million internationally for a total of $32.6 million to close its theatrical run.
Directed by Cabin Fever and Thanksgiving's Eli Roth, Borderlands is based on the popular video game series of the same name, following a team of misfits on a mission to save a missing girl.
Despite its all-star ensemble cast, including Cate Blanchett, Kevin Hart, Edgar Ramírez, Jamie Lee Curtis, Ariana Greenblatt, Florian Munteanu, Janina Gavankar, and the voice of Jack Black, the film never reflected the talent behind it.
While the film had widely been slammed by its audience, one positive came from it: the Borderlands movie turned Cate Blanchett into a PS5 gamer.
