Box Office: ‘Jackass Forever’ Laughs Hard With $9.6M Friday

Jackass Forever started its domestic box office run with a hearty $9.6 million on Friday from 3,604 theaters, including $1.7 million in Thursday previews.

That puts the R-rated film on course to collect $20 million or more in its domestic opening, a strong start for a movie that cost a modest $10 million to produce.

Paramount Pictures, MTV Entertainment and Dick Productions are reviving Johnny Knoxville’s slapstick, gross-out comedy franchise after a 12-year hiatus from the big screen.

Heading into the weekend, the R-rated film had been tracking to open in the mid-teens. Its better-than-expected performance is thanks to a strong turnout from younger males.

Like many other pandemic-era franchise installments, Jackass Forever will have a hard time matching the opening of the previous film, Jackass 3D, which debuted to $50 million.

Jackass Forever, which reunites many original crewmembers, stars Johnny Knoxville, Steve-O, Chris Pontius, Dave England, Wee Man, Danger Ehren, Preston Lacy, Sean “Poopies” McInerney, Zach Holmes, Eric Manaka and Rachel Wolfson. (There are also numerous cameos.)

The Motion Picture Association’s rating board slapped Jackass Forever with an R for “strong crude material and dangerous stunts, graphic nudity and language throughout.”

Centropolis is also opening Roland Emmerich’s sci-fi disaster pic Moonfall this weekend. Lionsgate is distributing the independently made movie.

The big-budget film, which according to Emmerich, cost $138 million to produce, grossed an estimated $3.5 million on Friday from 3,446 locations for a projected $9.4 million opening. Friday’s haul included $700,000 in Thursday previews.

Moonfall stars Halle Berry, Patrick Wilson, John Bradley, Michael Pe?a, Charlie Plummer, Kelly Yu and Donald Sutherland.

Jackass Forever earned a B+ CinemaScore, while Moonfall was sent to the back of the class with a C+.
