Brian Tyree Henry Joins Uni’s Pharrell Williams-Michel Gondry Musical
Brian Tyree Henry (Causeway) has signed on to star alongside Kelvin Harrison Jr., Da’Vine Joy Randolph and Halle Bailey in Universal’s untitled coming-of-age musical from director Michel Gondry and producer Pharrell Williams.
No word yet on the role Henry will be playing. Written by Martin Hynes and Steven Levenson, the film set in 1977 Virginia Beach draws inspiration from Williams’ childhood growing up in the city’s Atlantis Apartments.

Williams and Mimi Valdés will produce through i am OTHER, alongside Gil Netter for Gil Netter Productions. Universal’s Senior Vice President of Production Development Ryan Jones and Director of Production Development Christine Sun are overseeing the project for the studio.
Most recently reprising his role as Apex Cybernetics technician turned whistleblower Bernie Hayes in Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire, Henry prior to that starred in FX’s Class of ’09, having broken out with his starring role on the network’a acclaimed comedy Atlanta from Donald Glover. He landed his first Oscar nomination for his work opposite Jennifer Lawrence in Apple TV+’s veteran drama Causeway and has also appeared in films like Bullet Train, Eternals, Joker, If Beale Street Could Talk, and Widows, among others.
Up next, the actor will be seen starring in Amazon MGM Studios’ boxing drama The Fire Inside from filmmaker Rachel Morrison, out August 9. Additionally, he exec produces and stars in Apple’s upcoming crime drama Sinking Spring, will be heard in Transformers One in September, and is set to return for Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse after working on the first two Spider-Verse films.
