Britney Spears' 2011 Song 'Selfish' Overtakes Justin Timberlake's New Single of Same Name on iTunes Charts

Days after Timberlake dropped his new single, fans of Spears have thrown their support to her 13-year-old 'Femme Fatale' track

Justin Timberlake's new single may be called "Selfish," but it still has to share the charts.

Britney Spears' 2011 track "Selfish" has overtaken Timberlake's new lead single of the same name on iTunes following a push from Spears fans to support the 13-year-old Femme Fatale cut.

Following the Thursday release of Timberlake's new single and music video, Spears fans rallied around her own song of the same name on social media, ultimately helping elevate it to the No. 1 spot on the iTunes charts on Friday.

As of Saturday morning, the song is sitting at No. 2 on the iTunes Top Songs chart for digital downloads, with Timberlake's "Selfish" trailing behind at No. 4.

The "Selfish" face-off comes as "Selfish by Britney Spears" trended on X (formerly Twitter) Friday. Some Spears fans even encouraged radio stations to play the decade-old bonus track.

And it wasn't just "Selfish" that has returned to the charts for Spears, 42. The music videos for both Spears' "Oops!... I Did It Again" and "I'm a Slave 4 U" occupy the top two spots on iTunes' music videos chart as well, with Timberlake's new visual trailing behind at No. 3.

Timberlake's "Selfish" remains within the Top 50 on U.S. Spotify. Its spot on the Billboard Hot 100 will be determined when the list releases on Tuesday.

The charting proximity of both "Selfish" songs also follows multiple revelations made by Spears in her 2023 memoir The Woman in Me involving the former *NSYNC star and ex-boyfriend, 42.

On March 15, Timberlake will release Everything I Thought It Was, his first studio album since 2018's Man of the Woods. In a conversation with Zane Lowe on Apple Music 1 about "Selfish," Timberlake said that the new material will give his supporters a "real" perspective on his life.

"I was able, on some of the songs, to look back at the past and have a real, not a refracted perspective of what it was because they always say ... you always hear that thing about, well, there's never any truth, there's just everybody's perspective of what happened," he said.

"But to really look at it and be able to metabolize and verbalize my perspective on it, I don't think I've ever really done that before."

Timberlake also teased "introspective and "incredibly honest" songs on the new record, some of which he'll be taking on tour with him starting in April. His Forget Tomorrow World Tour kicks off in Vancouver on April 29 and hits several cities in North America before a July stop in Lexington, Kentucky.

The pop star also revealed to Lowe that he recorded 100 songs for his first album in six years, adding that he "worked for a long time on this album" and had to narrow down to just 18 tracks.

"I think every artist probably says this, but it is my best work," Timberlake said, adding that it includes "moments that are incredibly honest, but also, there's a lot of f---ing fun on this album."
