Britney Spears and Sam Asghari Settle Their Divorce 9 Months After Filing
The former couple now await a judge's final signoff after Asghari filed for divorce last August, following 14 months of marriage
Britney Spears and Sam Asghari have settled their divorce, PEOPLE confirms.
The resolution comes nine months after they separated following 14 months of marriage and Asghari subsequently filed for divorce. PEOPLE has learned the former couple upheld the terms of their prenuptial agreement, and the papers now await signoff from a judge to finalize the split. TMZ was first to report the news.
"The divorce was amicable and the prenup was not challenged," a source tells PEOPLE. "Britney is continuing to flex her freedom and is moving on."
The source also clarifies that despite previous reports, Spears is not on Asghari's current lease nor paying his rent. "The report that she is in financial distress is false and she is not on any lease for him," the insider says.
Following his divorce filing, Asghari, 30, spoke out for the first time about his split from Spears, 42, with a statement on social media.
"After six years of love and commitment to each other my wife and I have decided to end our journey together. We will hold onto the love and respect we have for each other and I wish her the best always," the actor wrote on his Instagram Story.

At the time of her split from Asghari, a source told PEOPLE exclusively that the "Circus" singer was still "in great spirits despite everything going on."
“Obviously it's never an easy thing to go through, but she’s remaining positive and focusing on the future," the insider added.
In the filing obtained by PEOPLE, Asghari cited irreconcilable differences as their reason for divorcing and July 28, 2023 as their date of separation.
The pop superstar and the actor began dating in 2016 after meeting on the set of Spears' "Slumber Party" music video.
After Asghari proposed to Spears in September 2021, they tied the knot on June 9, 2022 in a Los Angeles ceremony that had a star-studded guest list, including Drew Barrymore, Madonna, Paris Hilton and Selena Gomez.
In the months since their split, Asghari told PEOPLE he considered his time with Spears "a blessing."
“It was a blessing to be able to share life with someone for a long time. And people grow apart and people move on,” the actor said. “I've always hated people leaving a certain relationship — and at some point they told each other they love each other and they sat at the same table and ate food [together] — so I never understood when people part ways [and] they talk badly about each other. That's something I'm never going to do because I had nothing but an amazing experience and a great life, and that's always going to be part of my life, a chapter of my life."

Late last month, Spears also settled with her father Jamie Spears over legal fees after a two-and-half-year battle following the end of her conservatorship. The pair settled for an undisclosed sum in Los Angeles Superior Court on Thursday, April 25.
"Although the conservatorship was terminated in November 2021, her wish for freedom is now truly complete," Spears' attorney, Mathew S. Rosengart, said in a statement. "As she desired, her freedom now includes that she will no longer need to attend or be involved with court or entangled with legal proceedings in this matter.”
“Britney Spears won when the court suspended her father, and Britney Spears won when her fundamental rights and civil liberties were restored,” Rosengart continued.
Jamie’s attorney, Alex Weingarten, said that the two parties “reached a settlement agreement resolving all outstanding disputes.”
“I cannot comment on any specifics as the settlement is confidential. Jamie is thrilled that this is all behind him. He loves his daughter very much and everything he has ever done has been to protect and support her,” Weingarten continued in a statement to PEOPLE. “It is unfortunate that some irresponsible people in Britney’s life chose to drag this on for as long as it has.”
