How Brooklyn-based fashion entrepreneur Hud Oberly uses his clothing brand to spotlight Indigenous communities
As founder and designer of Brooklyn-based fashion brand Here’s To You, Hud Oberly (@huddleberryfinn) gives back to creative communities. Hud’s brand serves not only to represent creative communities but also creates clothing with this demographic in mind.
“The two pillars that we prioritize are the Indigenous creative community and the New York City/ Brooklyn creative community,” Hud says.
Hud, who is Osage, Caddo and Comanche, says that the Indigenous community is seeing a lot of progress in shining a spotlight on creatives. He adds, “I have the belief that if you add creativity to your day, you’re a happier person; you’ll have a more positive outlook on life.”
Through Here’s To You, Hud offers support for professional artists as well as hobby creatives who use their art to bring more positivity to their lives.
In addition to his own work, Hud serves on the board of the Native Foreign Scholars Fund, the largest scholarship provider for Indigenous students in the United States. He says that he takes much pride in this work, using it as an opportunity to discover more ways to incorporate creative partnerships throughout his endeavors.
“I do know that it can help to see someone that looks like you in certain spaces and see someone doing something in a place that maybe you wouldn’t expect,” Hud says. “So leading by example is how I hope to inspire Indigenous youth.”
Hud recognizes the impact his community has had on his own success, noting, “There are things that would not have happened without the help of others, and going to a place where you have a support system is so important. So that is something I always try to share.”
