Cam’ron Freestyles Over D’Angelo’s “Cruisin'” Beat To Kick Off ‘It Is What It Is’ Season 3
Cam’ron has commemorated the premiere of Season 3 of It Is What It Is with a new freestyle reflecting on his journey from rapper to budding media mogul.
Rhyming over the instrumental to D’Angelo’s 1995 single “Cruisin’,” Killa begins his rhyme spill with nods to Mobb Deep members Havoc and Prodigy before expressing his affinity for Wu-Tang Clan’s gritty anthem “C.R.E.A.M.”
Clad in a blue suit, white shirt, colorful tie and glasses, the Harlem native mixes gravitas with slick wordplay, rhyming “Thanks Method Man that hook made my Beretta dance/ And no I never left no prints I had them leather hands/ 38, it will never jam, just smoke like the Netherlands/ Been fly for years, seem like I’ll never land/ I was in Rhode Island, counting millions in The Sheraton/ All brown shearling, for sure, sure made me prevalent.”
The 48-year-old then recalls days as a street hustler and memories of catching public transportation in Manhattan, as well as the height of Dipset’s reign, which coincided with LeBron James’ coming of age. “We had the winters while Jay gave us the summers/ Bron still in high school dunking and hitting jumpers/ Kept Mav and Rich with ’em, Leon Rose like why you dump us,” he mused before ending the freestyle with a story of a parking lot encounter turned sexual, and additional tales from his wilder days.
Cam’ron’s new freestyle comes as a pleasant surprise, as the rap vet has been largely focusing on capitalizing on the runaway success of his sports talk show It Is What It Is, which has quickly become one of the more popular media platforms among Hip-Hop fans.
Hosted by himself and rapper Ma$e, It Is What It Is has been cosigned by athletes, journalists and reporters alike, with Stephen A. Smith, Mark Jackson, O.J. Simpson, Maurice Clarett, and others appearing as guests and commentators on the show. The pair made headlines after inking a reported eight-figure deal last year with Underdog Fantasy, an online gambling platform.
Cam’ron’s last album, U Wasn’t There (with A-Trak), dropped in 2022, but he has recurrently reminded fans — old and new — of his rap prowess, as he previously laid down bars over Lil Yachty’s “The Secret Recipe” beat in October 2023.
