Candice Bergen Declared 'National Treasure' After Bold Joke at the 2024 Emmys Receives Huge Reaction: 'Meow'
Candice Bergen stood up for "childless cat ladies" everywhere when she appeared at the 2024 Emmys to present the Lead Comedy Actress award.
Before announcing the winner—Jean Smart for Hacks—the legendary actress gave a speech where she called out JD Vance for his controversial comments about women without children.
“For 11 years, I had the tremendous privilege of playing the lead in a comedy series called Murphy Brown," Bergen said. "I was surrounded by brilliant and funny actors. Had the best scripts to work with. And in one classic moment, my character was attacked by Vice President Dan Quayle when Murphy became pregnant and decided to raise the baby as a single mother."
“Oh, how far we’ve come," Bergen continued. "Today, a Republican candidate for vice president would never attack a woman for having kids. So as they say, My work here is done. Meow."
Social media was quick to praise Bergen for her "not so subtle shoutout."
It was the perfect "mic drop" according to another X user.

Another fan pointed out that the 78-year-old star was still as sharp as ever, having not lost any "comedic timing."
Others called her a "national treasure."
Former Vice President Dan Quayle gave a speech in 1992 where he criticized Murphy Brown for having "a character who supposedly epitomizes today’s intelligent, highly paid professional woman, mocking the importance of fathers by bearing a child alone and calling it just another lifestyle choice.”
