Cardi B Literally Took Over the 2024 Met Gala Carpet with Her Dress
Cardi B
Ahead of the 2024 Met Gala, Cardi B explained that her strategy was to “be iconic”—as always, she more than delivered on that promise.
Known for pushing the boundaries of fashion, the “Punteria” rapper turned heads as she stepped out in a striking gown for the high-fashion event. This year, Cardi wore an all-black strapless dress with a huge skirt that fanned out around her and literally took over the entire carpet.
The gown also featured a fluttery neckline that defied gravity, forming a V to frame the stunning diamond and emerald necklace and earrings Cardi wore. As the rapper changed angles to pose for other photographers on the carpet, nine people had to work together to lift and move the dress' massive skirt.
The look has been months in the making, thanks to her stylist Kollin Carter, as the duo worked tirelessly to pay tribute to the evening's theme celebrating the Costume Institute’s spring exhibition, “Sleeping Beauties: Reawakening Fashion,” and the official dress code “The Garden of Time."
“We’re always thinking ahead,” the 31-year-old previously told The Hollywood Reporter, adding, “We always try to make sure that everything goes right, that everything be iconic. We want everything to be iconic. I know people sometimes be like, ‘Oh, it’s not about who is there and who is not,’ but it’s like, no, you need to remember us forever.”
Cardi—full name Belcalis Marlenis Almánzar—made her debut at the Met Gala in 2018, paying tribute to the “Heavenly Bodies” theme in a bedazzled regal Moschino gown—escorted by the designer Jeremy Scott—as she cradled her growing baby bump.
She upstaged herself the following year, delivering a head-turning look in a burgundy Thom Browne gown accentuated with feathers, a bedazzled headpiece, and a quilted train.
In 2022, Cardi put her curves on display in a chain link gold dress by Atelier Versace, while last year’s look paid tribute to Karl Lagerfeld, as her tuxedo top billowed out into a skirt with massive black flowers—a look she completed with a sleek gray wig.
The 2024 installment of the annual event took place on Monday, May 6, with hosts Zendaya, Jennifer Lopez, Bad Bunny, and Chris Hemsworth.
