Carl Weathers, Star of Rocky Films and The Mandalorian, Dead at 76
Carl Weathers, best known for playing Apollo Creed in the Rocky films, among countless other projects, died Thursday, according to a statement from his family. He was 76 years old.
The statement, obtained by our sister site Deadline, reads: “We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Carl Weathers. He died peacefully in his sleep on Thursday, February 1st, 2024. … Carl was an exceptional human being who lived an extraordinary life. Through his contributions to film, television, the arts and sports, he has left an indelible mark and is recognized worldwide and across generations. He was a beloved brother, father, grandfather, partner, and friend.”

An official cause of death was not included in the statement.
In addition to regularly playing Rocky Balboa’s rival in the ring from 1976 to 1985, Weathers’ resumé includes memorable roles in films like Predator (1987) and Happy Gilmore (1996).
On the small screen, Weathers last played The Mandalorian‘s Greef Karga, a role for which he received a Primetime Emmy Award nomination for Outstanding Guest Actor in a Drama Series.
Weathers also had a memorable recurring role on the Fox-turned-Netflix comedy Arrested Development, playing a heightened, thriftier version of himself who became a reluctant acquaintance of David Cross’ Tobias Fünke. Additional TV credits included starring roles on Street Justice, In the Heat of the Night and Chicago Justice.
Most recently, Weathers filmed a FanDuel commercial for next week’s Super Bowl, appearing opposite Rob Gronkowski. Click here to watch it.

Prior to launching his acting career, Weathers was a professional football player, joining the Oakland Raiders (1970–1971) before signing with Canada’s BC Lions (1971–1973).
