Casa Bonita documentary to debut in Denver
DENVER (KDVR) — Those around Colorado have probably heard of Casa Bonita at some point. The famed Mexican restaurant features an indoor waterfall, cliff divers and haunted caves. Created in 1974, the restaurant became a must-visit stop for locals and out-of-state visitors and has been described as the “Disneyland of Mexican restaurants.”
With its storied history, it was a surprise to see the restaurant file for bankruptcy in 2021. But for two of Colorado’s celebrity exports, seeing Casa Bonita go down was not an option.

The creators of “South Park,” Matt Stone and Trey Parker, took over the ownership of the restaurant. The two have been vocal about their affinity for the restaurant in the past and have even made an episode of “South Park” centered around it.
The first trailer for their documentary “Casa Bonita Mi Amor!” has been released and showcases the behind-the-scenes of the restaurant’s revival.
“When you grow up in Colorado, you just remember how awesome it was,” Stone said in the trailer.
“When I was a kid, it was a dream that one day I could own Casa Bonita,” Parker said.
Casa Bonita documentary to get national release
Although they had realized a dream from their youth, the path to sustainability for Casa Bonita was not easily navigable for them. Being in the entertainment industry, they recognized the challenge would make for an interesting story and decided to capture footage of their journey and transform it into a documentary.

The trailer starts with a tone of joy showing the duo celebrating their new acquisition and footage of people enjoying the activities within Casa Bonita. As you dive deeper into the video, the mood becomes much more somber transitioning to shots of the rotten floorboards, broken glass and roaming pigeons in the building.
In the trailer, Parker was asked if there’s a chance that Casa Bonita will never open. “Yeah, there is,” Parker responded.
The documentary will be making its theatrical release on Sept. 6 in Denver at the Alamo Sloans Lake. Following the Colorado release, the documentary will be shown nationally on Sept. 13 in select major cities including New York and Los Angeles.
For those not in these locations, the documentary will find its way to Paramount+ later in the fall.
