After endless waves of viral discourse about everything from her performances to her politics, Chappell Roan is taking time for herself. On Friday, September 27, the musician announced she would no longer be playing at the All Things Go music festival, which she was slated to perform in New York City on September 28 and Washington, D.C. the following day on September 29.
“I apologize to people who have been waiting to see me in NYC & DC this weekend at All Things Go, but I am unable to perform. Things have gotten overwhelming over the past few weeks and I am really feeling it,” the “Good Luck, Babe!” musician wrote in a statement on Instagram Stories. “I feel pressures to prioritize a lot of things right now and I need a few days to prioritize my health. I want to be present when I perform and give the best shows possible. Thank you for understanding. Be back soon xox.”
This announcement comes after yet another wave of heated conversation surrounding Roan, this time not for her frustrations with obsessive fan culture, but for her refusal to endorse a presidential candidate in the upcoming 2024 election. “I don’t feel pressured to endorse someone. There’s problems on both sides,” she said in a recent profile with the Guardian. After fans and skeptics alike took to X (formerly Twitter) to accuse her of equivocating the two parties, she elaborated on her previous statements and confirmed her plan to vote for VP Kamala Harris in a series of TikTok videos, also receiving backlash (Roan mispronounced “Kamala,” which is correctly pronounced “comma-la”).
In the Guardian profile, Roan opened up about her severe depression diagnosis, having experienced symptoms of forgetfulness, brain fog, and lack of focus. “My whole life has changed…Everything that I really love to do now comes with baggage,” the musician told the publication.
In response to Roan’s All Things Go statement, the festival voiced its support for her across social media. “We’re heartbroken to announce that Chappell Roan will no longer be performing at this year’s festivals. While we know how much you were looking forward to the performances, it’s important to remember that health and well-being always comes first,” All Things Go published in an Instagram post. “Let’s continue to show the world that music fans support not just the art, but the artists themselves.”
