Chappell Roan Explains Experiences With Stalker, Aggressive Fans After Calling Out “Predatory Behavior”

Chappell Roan is opening up about her experiences with a stalker and other aggressive fans following her strong message asking people to respect her boundaries.

In a Rolling Stone profile, the pop star shared she has a stalker, who she had met in her home state of Missouri. The situation had grown severe, as the person had been seen at her family’s home and made their way to Roan’s hotel room while the singer was in New York. “So now I have to have security,” she revealed. “It’s so lame.”

This hasn’t been the only alarming incident she has faced recently. Roan said that when she traveled to Seattle in July, some fans managed to get ahold of her flight details and waited for her at the airport. A man grew aggressive after Roan refused to sign his autograph until police had to intervene. The same man was present at the airport when she arrived back at LAX. “I got home and dropped to my knees,” recalled Roan. “I have a hard time crying now because of my meds, but I sobbed and I was screaming.”

In another terrifying run-in with a fan, she was grabbed and kissed by a stranger while out for a friend’s birthday. That same night, she found out her father’s phone number had been leaked. This prompted her now-viral TikTok setting strict boundaries. She additionally posted a seven-slide Instagram text post pleading for fans to “please stop” touching her and “being weird” to her loved ones. She also told them to not address her by her real name, Kayleigh.

Roan revealed that many fellow women in music have reached out in support, even giving tips on handling her newfound fame. The names include Charli XCX, Billie Eilish, Sabrina Carpenter, Paramore bandleader Hayley Williams, Katy Perry, Lady Gaga, Phoebe Bridgers, Lucy Dacus and Julien Baker. Lorde gave her a list of what to do to travel undetected by fans, while Mitski emailed her, writing, “I just wanted to humbly welcome you to the shittiest exclusive club in the world, the club where strangers think you belong to them and they find and harass your family members.”

While looking back at those big names who have been there for her, Roan noted that she has received more support from women in the industry than men. “Not a lot of boys have been like, ‘Let me know if you ever want to talk about it,'” she admitted. Some who have reached out, though, include Orville Peck, Troye Sivan, Noah Kahan and Elton John.

“I am very protective of her,” John told the outlet. “She is kind, innocent and wonderful. She is not ‘Chappell Roan’ offstage — a bit like me. She is one of those people who I felt like I have known for a long time.”
