More from Billboard
The Billboard 200: On the album chart this week, hip-hop duo Macklemore & Ryan Lewis surprised many with its indie release “The Heist”, as the album opened at No. 2 with 78,000 sold according to Nielsen SoundScan. Meanwhile, Mumford & Sons’ “Babel” held at No. 1 for a third week, while a total of seven debuts bowed in the top 10.
But now, let’s take a look at some of the other movers and shakers on the Billboard 200 and elsewhere on our album charts:
Macklemore & Ryan Lewis’ ‘Heist’ Album Debuts At No. 2 On Billboard 200, Mumford Holds at No. 1
— Tame Impala: The Australian band breaks through to the Billboard 200 with its second album, “Lonerism,” selling 12,000 in its debut at No. 34. Their last set topped out at No. 28 on Heatseekers Albums, spending six weeks on the new artists tally in 2010-2011.
— The Wallflowers: The rock band returns with “Glad All Over” (No. 48, debut), its first studio album since 2005’s “Rebel, Sweetheart” debuted and peaked at No. 40. On the Triple A airplay chart, the group’s current single “Reboot the Mission” holds at its peak of No. 2 for a third straight week.
— The Beatles: Perhaps with the arrival of the remastered reissue of “Magical Mystery Tour” (a re-entry at No. 57), the Beatles’ catalog has finally been completely overhauled. “Magical” also returns to the Catalog chart, becoming the band’s fifth leader on the tally (8,000 sold last week; up from a mere handful of units the week previous).
“Magical Mystery Tour” was likely the final major album in the band’s catalog that was due to be refreshed and reissued. It follows repackages of the group’s entire studio output, along with their soundtracks and a handful of significant greatest hits albums.
— “Rock of Ages” Soundtrack: The musical film’s DVD and pay-per-view debut on Oct. 9 yields a 264% increase for the soundtrack, which sells 7,000 and reenters at No. 68 It’s the third largest selling soundtrack of the year, behind “Hunger Games” (447,000) and “The Bodyguard” (216,000).
— Freelance Whales: The band makes a splash with its second full-length album, starting with a little over 4,000 sold at No. 109 on the Billboard 200 and No. 1 on Heatseekers Albums. It’s the act’s first entry on the the Billboard 200. The group’s first full-length set, 2011’s “Weathervanes,” hit No. 16 on Heatseekers last year.
— Florida Georgia Line: The new group is making a run for No. 1 on the Hot Country Songs chart, as “Cruise” drives 6-3 this week. Concurrently, its parent album “It’z Just What We Do,” scores its sixth straight weekly sales gain (up 14%, climbing 4-2 on Heatseekers).
— Celtic Woman: The vocal ensemble achieves its ninth No. 1 on the World Albums chart with their second holiday effort, “Home For Christmas” (4,000). They’ve eclipsed Celtic Thunder as the act with the most No. 1s in the history of the chart. Though, it’s presumed that the next time Celtic Thunder drops an album, it will probably hit No. 1, bring the two Celtic acts back into a tie for the most toppers. (All but three of Celtic Thunder’s 11 entries on the World chart have hit No. 1.)
— Jason Gould: In the same week Barbra Streisand notches her 32nd top 10 album on the Billboard 200 chart with the debut of “Release Me” (No. 7), her son Jason Gould arrives with his self-titled debut EP at No. 37 on Heatseekers Albums. He’s a special guest on Streisand’s tour, which runs through Nov. 11.
