Who Will Get Promoted in Chicago P.D. Season 12?
According to a September 18 report from TV Insider, look for the promotion to happen in Episode 6. Showrunner Gwen Sigan confirmed, “People are going to be promoted.”
Sigan shared with TV Insider, “Someone’s getting promoted, and it’s somebody I think who’s wanted it for a while and that it made a lot of sense for us. In the [writers’] room, we’ve talked about that storyline for so long, but how do you make it a story? How do you make it interesting? How do you make it something that really reveals something about who this person is and is not just a piece of paper?”
Of course, Sigan didn’t spill the beans about who will be promoted. “We really leaned into the real promotion process in Chicago and just show that it actually is really hard to become a detective, and so seeing that and seeing this character and what it means as far as looking at who you want to be as a police officer and how it’s going to be affected by a promotion like this was really fun,” she explained. “And I think it’ll add some new dynamics to the unit.”

Could it be Atwater? In a July interview with TV Insider, LaRoyce Hawkins discussed what might be next for his character, Atwater. With Tracy Spiridakos’ (Detective Hailey Upton) departure in the Season 11 finale, there is an opening for Atwater to take on a new role in Season 12.
Hawkins weighed in on how likely it is that Atwater fills the vacancy. “To be honest with you, I don’t think I’m really worried about teammates as much as I would really love to be a detective, since it doesn’t seem like we have any detectives on the unit,” he told TV Insider.
“Somebody should probably step up. Somebody might deserve that role with those responsibilities, but it’s up to the powers that be, naturally,” he added.

In a Chicago P.D. Reddit discussion, fans shared their best insight into who might be promoted. “Interesting that besides Voight, all the original detectives are gone. Chicago Fire has seen people get promoted as well as The Rookie. You’d think by now that in the narrative these three (Ruzek, Burgess, and Atwater) would have worked their way towards promotion to detective,” one fan wrote.
One fan commented, “I really want Atwater to be promoted this season. He deserves it.”
Another person noted, “You’d think after all this time that Ruzek would have taken the detective exam by now.”
One sleuthing fan noted, “Rumor has it episode 6 will have a promotion for the IU unit. Coincidentally it also appears to be a Burgess centric episode according to multiple behind-the-scenes pictures. Color me shocked.”
Chicago P.D. Season 12 premieres on September 25 at 10 p.m. on NBC and streams on Peacock.
