For a moment there, Chicago P.D. had us fooled. The latest episode of the show, titled “Pawns,” saw Kim Burgess (Marina Squerciati) take the written detective test, which she aces. Later, after handling the case well on a ride-along with Detective Suarez, Kim officially makes detective. For Kim, this is a great achievement that’s not all tainted by the fact that she covers for Detective Suarez’s mistake and almost makes it so Suarez can’t fail her. But, when Detective Suarez suggests that she’d be doing her a favor by putting her back in Intelligence, Kim fights back.

If there’s one thing Kim Burgess doesn’t want is preferential treatment. She’s a good cop, Suarez herself said so. She aced the written test, she worked on her case, and though she made a mistake during the processing of the scene at first, she still managed to solve it because she followed every lead and had her team behind her. So, Kim doesn’t want favors. She wants what she’s earned.
For Suarez, that means not putting her back in Intelligence. Not because she’s a bad cop, on the contrary. Suarez suggests the issue with Intelligence is Voight. Not in a bad way. For Suarez, though, Voight is a good Sargeant. He’s a protector. And being in Intelligence would not allow Kim to grow in the way being somewhere else would.
It’s clear Kim wants to be in Intelligence. That’s her team. And if we remember back to where she started, Intelligence is what she wanted. Plus, being in Intelligence allows her to work with Adam, which is always a plus not just because they can have each other’s backs, but also because same schedules! When you have a kid, that’s convenient. But Kim wants to be a good detective even more, so she accepts Suarez’s recommendation. She’ll be leaving Intelligence.

Or at least that’s how it looks like, to the point that she even tells Adam about it. And then there’s a last-minute twist that probably comes with another twist, as Deputy Chief Reid informs her that he makes the final decision, and his decision is to assign her back to Intelligence. This is the same Chief who assigned Detective Suarez especially to do her ride-along, and who has had a special interest in Intelligence from the beginning.
Kim is clear that she doesn’t want any favors, but Reid doesn’t listen. Kim stays in Intelligence. It seems for a while that might be at Voight’s urging, but he confirms he didn’t ask Deputy Chief Reid to change her assignment. That means this “favor” comes straight from Reid, and Voight seems to think it’s going to cost them at some point. The question, of course, is… who is the favor even for? Kim or Voight? And why is Reid even delivering unasked favors in the first place?
