Chloe Zhaoā€™s ā€˜Hamnetā€™ Lands at Focus Features, Steven Spielberg Boards as Producer

Oscar-winner ChloĆ© Zhaoā€™s next film ā€œHamnetā€ has landed at Focus Features with Steven Spielberg newly joining the project as a producer.

ā€œHamnetā€ is adapted from Maggie Oā€™Farrellā€™s Shakespeare-era novel, which was published in 2020 and fictionalizes the life of the Bardā€™s son who died at a young age. As previously announced, Jessie Buckley and Paul Mescal will star in ā€œHamnetā€ alongside Emily Watson and Joe Alwyn. Zhao wrote the screenplay with Oā€™Farrell.

Focus will release ā€˜Hamnetā€™ in the U.S. on a yet-to-be-determined date, with Universal Pictures International handling the theatrical rollout in the rest of the world.

Along with Spielberg, producers on the movie include Liza Marshall (ā€œThe End We Start Fromā€), Pippa Harris (ā€œ1917ā€) and Sam Mendes (ā€œ1917ā€). Executive producers are Kristie Macosko Krieger, Nic Gonda and Laurie Borg.

Zhaoā€™s latest film was Disneyā€™s 2021 Marvel adventure ā€œEternals,ā€ which wasnā€™t all that well received at the box office (at least, by the Marvel Cinematic Universeā€™s sky-high standards) with $402 million globally. She made that film after becoming only the second woman ever to win best director at the Oscars for 2020ā€™s ā€œNomadland,ā€ which also took home the prize for best picture. Her other features include ā€œSongs My Brothers Taught Meā€ and ā€œThe Rider.ā€

Focus Featuresā€™ upcoming slate is comprised of ā€œPiece by Piece,ā€ an animated biopic about Pharrell Williams thatā€™s told through the lens of Legos, as well as Robert Eggersā€™ ā€œNosferatuā€ remake, Edward Bergerā€™s thriller ā€œConclaveā€ and Steven Soderberghā€™s crime drama ā€œBlack Bagā€ with Cate Blanchett and Michael Fassbender.
