Cindy Crawford Reveals What Happened to Her Iconic 1991 Red Versace Oscars Dress During ‘Watch What Happens Live’ Appearance

Cindy Crawford got candid during her recent appearance on Wednesday for Bravo’s “Watch What Happens Live.” The longtime model addressed what happened to her iconic red Versace dress she wore to the 1991 Academy Awards, where she accompanied actor Richard Gere.

The model answered a fan question regarding the status of the dress and if the gown was still in Crawford’s possession. “You’re going to make me cry because I did have that dress,” Crawford said. “Anna Wintour asked for it for a charity auction,” the model explained.

Crawford’s Versace dress was part of the 1999 charity auction benefiting the American Foundation for AIDS Research. The scarlet crepe evening dress featured a sleeveless bodice constructed with abstract borders and a dramatic neckline

The gown also featured an exposed back and off-center jewel closure. The gown was auctioned off for $12,650, per Christie’s. “I should’ve just bought it back myself,” Crawford admitted during her appearance on the late-night talk show.

Crawford’s iconic red dress is perhaps one of the most memorable from the Oscars red carpet and had a major influence on the world of fashion, Oscars red carpet style and on Crawford’s profile at the time. And it was an iconic moment for Versace too as it was the first time the brand appeared on the Oscars red carpet.

In an Instagram post last year, Crawford recalled wearing the dress in 1991. “It was actually the first time a Versace gown had ever been worn on the red carpet,” she captioned a photo. “Will never forget that moment,” stylist Samantha McMillen commented.

The model’s relationship with the Italian luxury fashion house continued well beyond that early ’90s appearance at the Oscars and collaboration on the red dress. In 2017, Crawford appeared alongside other supermodels Naomi Campbell, Carla Bruni, Helena Christensen and Claudia Schiffer to close the Versace show as a tribute to Gianni Versace.

Other stars who donated pieces to the March 1999 auction include Jamie Lee Curtis, Claire Danes, Laura Dern and more. One of the most expensive dresses sold at the auction was Cher’s 1983 Oscars dress designed by Bob Mackie — the look was sold at auction for $27,600.
