“Epic is one of those labels who understands me as an artist and as a person, and I’m super appreciative of that,” Leray tells THR in announcing the deal. “They support me rather than try to tell me what to do, and that’s all an artist can ask for when it comes to signing with a major label.”
Prior to her move to the Sony Music subsidiary, Leray has released music via Republic Records and Island Records, both companies under the Universal Music Group umbrella.
Leray’s 2023 hit single, the platinum-certified “Players,” earned the artist her first best rap performance Grammy nomination in 2024. She was also nominated in the best pop dance recording category that year for David Guetta’s “Baby Don’t Hurt,” which she featured on alongside British singer Anne-Marie.
What Happened to Forever is a five-track project inspired by true events and has been described as “intensely personal.” It features production by Tommy Brown, CashMoney AP, ItsnotHarold and Johnny Goldstein, among others. The collection will be the 27-year-old New Jersey native’s first release since her 2024 EP, Lemon Cars.
“A lot of people don’t understand that us artists go through real situations in life,” said Leray of the EP, which finds her pairing personal introspection with a pop sensibility over piano-led melodies and dulcet rhythms. “I’m still healing right? So it’s something I don’t want to speak about, but I guess I can say I let the music speak for me. [The] best way I can vent is through the music.”
She adds: “When I sat down with Sylvia [Rhone] and Ezekiel [Lewis], you can tell right away after hearing my story and what I’ve been through as an artist. Their response was flattering and showed how much they understand and believe in me.”
Epic Records is home to such artists as Travis Scott, Andre 3000, Meghan Trainor and Tyla, among others.
