Concert to lead 'global celebration for Detroit' at Michigan Central reopening June 6
In what it’s calling a “global celebration for Detroit and Detroiters,” Ford Motor Company will host a June 6 concert to kick off the grand opening of the resurrected Michigan Central Station.
In a presentation Tuesday morning to Detroit City Council, Michigan Central CEO Josh Sirefman outlined plans for the 90-minute, globally streamed concert, which will be staged at Roosevelt Park in front of the train station.
The free concert will be followed by daily open houses through June 16, allowing the public to tour the redeveloped 13-story building.
The grand opening events are the culmination of a six-year renovation project of the historic site, which was purchased by Ford for $90 million in 2018. The automaker pledged to invest $740 million in restoring the building and surrounding areas.
“We think this warrants a very extraordinary celebration,” Sirefman told council members.
Artists haven't been revealed for the June 6 concert, which will start at 8:30 p.m. Show details are set to be announced May 7, with rehearsals scheduled June 3-5.
The event will accommodate 15,000 concertgoers, Sirefman said. Advance registration will be required to attend, with priority given to residents in nearby neighborhoods, including Corktown, North Corktown, Hubbard Richard, Hubbard Farms, southwest Detroit and Core City.
The city council also heard details about parking for the Michigan Central opening festivities, including free public access to a 1,273-space garage on Bagley between 14th and Wabash streets.
"The tone and tenor of what we’re doing is about Detroiters," Sirefman told council members.
