‘Cops’ Crewmember Killed In Action To Get Tribute Episode: Video
Spike TV will air a one-hour clip show special Saturday featuring the work of longtime Cops audio technician Bryce Dion, who was killed during production last month when he was shot during filming of a robbery in progress at a Wendy’s restaurant in Omaha, NE.
The special episode, from Cops producer Langley Productions, will air at 8 PM ET/PT.
Dion was a seven-year veteran of Cops. He was struck by friendly fire during a shootout August 26 between Omaha Police and suspect Cortez Washington. Police said Washingont fired the first two shots from what was later determined to be an Airsoft pistol that does not fire bullets. Police said the shots produced a muzzle flash and sounded like actual gunshots, so three officers who had entered the restaurant fired at Washington, who ran out of the restaurant’s east door; Dion was in the east doorway and was hit.
Although he was wearing a ballistic vest, the bullet “came in under his left arm and slipped in between the vest, where there is an open area,” Omaha Police Chief Todd Schmaderer said during a news conference the next day. Local media reported that 30 shots were fired by police; a grand jury investigation is underway.
Dion had recently been promoted to audio supervisor at Langley Prods.
“Bryce had a passion for life and his work, and was always the first one to help anyone in need,” said Cops executive producers Morgan and John Langley. “He will best be remembered for a smile that never faded. All of us who knew him or worked with him on Cops, as well as the many friends he made working on documentaries and other shows, mourn his passing.”
