‘Crazy Rich Asians’ Rules Box Office for Third Straight Weekend

As summer comes to a close, three of the seasons major releases have hit box office milestones, with Warner Bros.’ “Crazy Rich Asians” topping the charts for a third consecutive weekend while crossing $100 million in domestic grosses.

With rave reviews and a devoted following from Asian-American moviegoers, “Crazy Rich Asians” has shown greater endurance than even the most optimistic analyst could have expected. After a $24 million second weekend and a drop-off of just six percent, WB is estimating a third weekend total of $22 million, a drop-off of just 10 percent. With Labor Day Monday included, director Jon M. Chu’s film is looking at a $28 million four-day weekend, which will push its domestic total to just under $117 million.

On top of that, “Asians” is also on pace to pass the domestic total of WB’s other current release, “The Meg,” which came in second this weekend with a $10.5 million three-day/$13 million four-day total, bringing its domestic total to $120 million. Next weekend, WB will look to continue what has been a strong Q3 for them with the “Conjuring” spinoff “The Nun,” which is expected to earn an opening of over $30 million.

Paramount’s “Mission: Impossible – Fallout” came in third in its sixth weekend in theaters with an estimated $9 million four-day total. That will both push “Fallout” past $200 million domestic and past the stateside run for its 2015 predecessor, “Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation.” It’s the first Paramount release since “Transformers: Age of Extinction” in 2014 to gross over $200 million domestic.

Way down the charts in 11th, Disney/Pixar’s “Incredibles 2” became the fourth Disney release in the last nine months to reach the $600 million domestic mark, making $4.5 million this Labor Day weekend to push its total to $602 million.

On the top 10 domestic box office list, “Incredibles 2” currently sits ninth and is joined on the list by five other Disney releases, including “Star Wars: The Last Jedi,” “Black Panther” and “Avengers: Infinity War.”

This weekend’s highest grossing new release is MGM’s “Operation Finale,” which opened on Wednesday and is estimated to earn a five-day opening of $7.7 million from 1,818 screens.

With Labor Day included, that start increases to $9.1 million, hitting tracker expectations. The true story thriller about the operation that apprehended the Nazi war criminal Adolf Eichmann in South America earned a 67 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A- on CinemaScore.

Disney’s “Christopher Robin” completes the top five with $7 million in its fifth weekend and a $87 million total, while Sony’s acclaimed cyber-thriller “Searching” expanded wide to 1,207 screens and earned a $6 million opening that put it in sixth this weekend.

Finally, outside the top 10, the Lionsgate sci-fi film “Kin” fell short of tracker expectations with a $3.6 million opening from 2,141 screens. The film earned a 34 percent Rotten Tomatoes score and a B+ on CinemaScore
