On Tuesday, Sept. 10, Dave Grohl shocked fans when he released an Instagram statement about his personal life. The news didn’t have anything to do with his wife, Jordyn Blum, or their three children, Violet, 18, Harper, 15, and Ophelia, 10 — it was about an extra-marital affair that produced a child.

“I’ve recently become the father of a new baby daughter, born outside of my marriage,” he wrote. “I plan to be a loving and supportive parent to her. I love my wife and my children, and I am doing everything I can to regain their trust and earn their forgiveness. We’re grateful for your consideration toward all the children involved, as we move forward together.” The message was straight to the point, but the revelation was not surprising to his ex-girlfriend, Tina Basich.
The snowboarder dated the Foo Fighters singer for two years in the late 1990s and documented their relationship in her 2003 memoir, Pretty Good for a Girl: The Autobiography of a Snowboarding Pioneer. Grohl was at the height of his career while she was nursing a broken leg back home — and that’s when she found out her rockstar boyfriend had more than one girlfriend.
“The pressure was too much for our relationship to handle,” she wrote in an excerpt, via Page Six. “You can only give up so much of your heart and your career and your time and your spirit, and here I was, giving it all up for a guy and losing myself in the process.” Basich realized that it was almost impossible for him to remain faithful to her with the lifestyle he led. “I don’t know how anyone in his profession can have a normal relationship with a girlfriend…or two, as it turned out. I found out secondhand, through the grapevine, when it seemed like everyone else in the world knew about it but me,” she added.
Basich claimed that “rockstar exits are the worst,” and it sounds like Blum and the Nirvana drummer’s first wife, Jennifer Youngblood, whom he was married to from 1994 to 1997, can relate to her situation. Grohl divulged to The Guardian in 2007 that it was indeed infidelity that led to the demise of his first marriage. So, there’s clearly a pattern of the 55-year-old musician stepping outside of his relationships, and now, it’s four kids and Blum who have to pay the price.
