David Henrie and Selena Gomez Return to Waverly Place in First Look at Reboot ‘Wizards Beyond Waverly Place’

Disney released a first look at its upcoming Wizards of Waverly Place sequel series, Wizards Beyond Waverly Place.

The two-minute video (below) that aired during the Disney Channel premiere of Descendants: The Rise of Red features behind-the-scenes moments from the show, featuring David Henrie’s Justin Russo and Selena Gomez’s Alex Russo, his onscreen sister. It also includes another familiar face from the original series: David DeLuise’s Jerry Russo.

While Gomez serves as an executive producer on the Wizards of Waverly Place reboot, she is only expected to appear in the first episode at this point. “This is where it all started,” she said in the first look. “We’re home.”

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place follows Justin as an adult, as he’s chosen to lead a normal, mortal life with his wife and two sons. When Alex shows up on his doorstep with Billie (Janice LeAnn Brown), a wizard-in-training, he “realizes he must dust off his magical skills to mentor the wizard-in-training while also juggling his everyday responsibilities — and safeguarding the future of the Wizard World,” according to the logline.

Alkaio Thiele, Max Matenko, Taylor Cora and Mimi Gianopulos round out the rest of the show’s cast.

Henrie previously teased what it was like reuniting with Gomez on the Wizards of Waverly Place reboot. “It was awesome. We didn’t want it to end. It was great,” he said about working together again after more than 10 years. “She’s so good. She has such a quick wit that’s only gotten stronger.”

Wizards Beyond Waverly Place is set to premiere on Disney Channel and Disney+ later this year.
