‘Dear White People’ Set To Debut In Series Format On Netflix

One of 2014’s breakthrough films is heading to Netflix in a major way. Dear White People will be turned into a 30-minute series on the streaming conglomerate, which is set to premiere in 2017, The Hollywood Reporter reveals.

The reel will be carved into a 10-episode comedy program that’ll still remain true to the premise of the movie. In a statement published on THR, the reel’s director/writer Justin Simien shared his elation with this news.

“During the film’s release, I had the pleasure to speak with hundreds of students and faculty across a variety of college campuses dealing with these very issues in real time,” he said. “I’m so grateful to have this platform — not only to give a voice to those too often unheard in our culture, but to also tell great stories from new points of views. From Day 1, Lionsgate has been remarkably supportive of the vision for the show, and working with Netflix is every bit as harmonious as I’d imagined it would be. Bringing this show to such a vibrant platform is an honor I don’t take lightly.”

Dear White People reportedly raked in $4.4 million stateside at the box office, serving as a springboard to promote the conversation of race in America, especially in our higher education spaces. The movie starred Tessa Thompson, Teyonah Parris, Dennis Haysbert and Tyler James Williams.
