Demi Moore's Comments About Aging Stir Up Heated Debate
Demi Moore unintentionally upset some fans during an appearance on the Today show with a comment she made about aging.
While promoting her upcoming film The Substance, Moore offered her opinion on some overarching themes of the movie, including her outlook on getting older. Ironically enough, the recent conversation comes when Moore, who celebrates her 62nd birthday this November, has sparked Oscar buzz and standing ovations at the Cannes Film Festival for her work in this most recent film.
Explaining to co-hosts Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie that she tries to be "as present in the moment as possible," the actress said with all the chatter and praise for her work in the new sci-fi/horror film, she feels an "excitement of possibility" not just for herself but other actors who have already celebrated their diamond jubilee birthday.
"We are what the future is for women," Moore shared. "I look at having my daughters, and I don't want there to ever be in their minds that there is an 'end.'"
"To me, this is the most exciting time of my life," the Ghost alum added. "I feel like I, my children are grown, I have the most independence and autonomy to really redefine where I want to go. I don't know what that looks like or where it is, but I'm just excited to be living in it."
Elsewhere in the conversation, Moore noted, "So often we place too much importance on the external markers, and I think what this [movie] is also trying to say is, 'where is our real priority? Where is our real love? Where does our real joy come from?' And it can only come from that self-love, self-acceptance."
Despite the overwhelmingly positive opinion shared by the movie star, some social media users eagerly pointed out some issues with her messaging given what she's had to say about plastic surgery in the past and the rumors that she's had extensive–and expensive–work done that left her with "a new face."
"Ugh she sets unrealistic standards with whatever invasive or non invasive procedures she’s done, constant upkeep of facials and treatments. Her words ring shallow. Not all women can afford to 'age' as she chooses," one Instagram viewer wrote in part, adding, "She’s afraid of aging, just as most women I think worry deeply about, and I wish she’d just be honest and say how she’s not representative of how women truly age. She’s just teaching her daughters to follow her example of combatting aging as much as possible, not embracing it."
"Have always loved her work, she’s incredibly beautiful…..and SMART. I’m a bit perplexed by a message saying embrace yourself, age with grace……yet she’s had WELL over $100,000 in cosmetic surgery (a face lift before her Fendi show about a year ago). Again, she looks great, seems happy, and don’t fault her choices….but with soooo much cosmetic surgery, it all just seems a little skewed," a second suggested. ?
"Too bad she's not honest about aging then," another snarky comment read.
"She [spent] hundreds of thousands on surgery," a fourth insisted. "She is not the person to ask about [aging]."
Others, however, took the opportunity to defend the Dirty Diana producer, with one writing, "the judgment in this comment section is not it… why can’t she have work done and still be talking about aging? we should be allowed to feel good about ourselves, and sometimes that’s a little boost we really need. You don’t need to put someone down for doing that to make yourself feel better."
"She’s been through so much and has showed great resilience to keep going, despite mistakes and hardships. As well as all that we go through as women in this society," another added. "I’m really happy to see her thriving creatively and in life!"
"I love this for her! She looks great. I don’t think she needs any of our opinions on her choices regarding her face etc. she just told you she is happy - let her be happy ppl!" a third declared.
