“Before I even worked with Sir Ridley Scott, I was a fan of his movies and his talent. But then he invited me into his tent (most recently into his Colosseum of ‘Gladiator II’) and the entire experience has been stunning,” Washington said after receiving his most recent Golden Globe bid. “The sheer size of this particular production and the incredible cast of actors and crew he assembled, not to mention what he literally built of ancient Rome, humbles me — it humbled me every day on set. And giving me Macrinus — to embody, to enjoy, to create — what an incredible honor this is, and has, been.”
The 69-year-old actor has been receiving raves for playing Macrinus, a former slave who now seeks to overthrow the empire, ever since “Gladiator II” started screening for critics. He shares the screen with Paul Mescal, who takes on the role of Lucius in Scott’s sequel film that takes place two decades after the original “Gladiator.” In addition to Washington’s nomination, the new film is also recognized at the 2025 Golden Globes in the Cinematic and Box Office Achievement category.
Washington now surpasses Sidney Poitier, who earned 10 competitive nominations at the Golden Globes, three of those in the now defunct World Film Favorite category, aka the Henrietta Award that was voted on by the fans. Poitier won two trophies — for “Lilies of the Field” (1963) in Best Film Drama Actor and as 1969’s World Film Favorite — and he was also the recipient of the 1982 Cecil B. DeMille Award.
