Desperately seeking an Emmy, 'Family Guy' goes crazy with TV parodies
On Sunday’s season premiere of Family Guy, Peter Griffin was fed up with the fact that his show never wins any Emmys. So he made a few changes, starting with replacing his wife, Lois, with Sofia Vergara — both in voice and in likeness. From there, the show went on to parody or reference more than 20 iconic TV shows, past and present.
The Emmy reach started with the show borrowing the premise of Transparent, when Peter’s character decides he wants to undergo gender reassignment. In that same world, Peter’s son Chris appears as Sheldon from The Big Bang Theory, baby Stewie and dog Brian are Cam and Mitchell from Modern Family, and daughter Meg is Lena Dunham in Girls.
Once Peter and the gang realized that comedy is too hard a category to win, they emulated some of TV’s all-time best dramas. The Sopranos, The Wire, and Breaking Bad — with Peter playing the suburban father who has broken bad — were all referenced, along with, of course, Game of Thrones.
After also trying their collective hand at other Emmy categories with parodies of Making a Murderer, Project Runway, and Real Time with Bill Maher, the Griffins finally decided that the best way to go after an Emmy is with an Emmy winner. So they showed a live-action video of Modern Family’s Ty Burrell fighting a rubber chicken.
Family Guy airs Sundays at 9 p.m. on Fox.
