‘The Devil Wears Prada’ sequel reportedly in development, according to multiple outlets

High-fashion fans can apparently get ready for a sequel to a classic film on the topic.

Multiple outlets, including Variety, have reported this week that Disney is developing a sequel to “The Devil Wears Prada,” the 2006 smash hit starring Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, a high-powered fashion magazine editor not exactly known for being nice.

The original film also starred Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt as Priestly’s oft-harassed assistants.

According to Variety, Aline Brosh McKenna, the screenwriter for the original film, is in talks to write the sequel.

Variety also reports that it’s not clear who from the original cast will return, but the storyline reportedly follows Priestly’s career as she navigates through the decline of traditional magazine publishing, all while encountering Blunt’s character, now an executive for a group with advertising dollars that Priestly badly needs.

The original film, based on Lauren Weisberger’s 2003 novel about a young woman’s awful experience working for a fashion magazine, was a huge box-office hit. Variety reports that it earned $326.7 million worldwide, while Streep won a Golden Globe for best actress in a comedy and also garnered an Academy Award nomination.

News of a sequel also comes as the stage musical version of “The Devil Wears Prada” begins previews in advance of an October opening on London’s West End. The musical stars Vanessa Williams as Priestly and features an original score by Elton John, Variety reports.

Meanwhile, after a big Fourth of July holiday weekend at the box office, there’s optimism that attending movies in theaters is back in style once again. Tuesday’s “Trending With Marcus” with WGN’s Marcus Leshock takes a look.
