Diane von Furstenberg Instagrams Photoshop of Bruce Jenner in a Dress, Responds to Criticism: 'I Wish Him Nothing But a Lifetime of Happiness'

It seems the quickest way to set off a social-media firestorm these days is to wade into the Bruce Jenner conversation without properly thinking things through. Kris Humphries found that out the hard way Sunday. Alice Eve learned her lesson Tuesday. And now designer Diane von Furstenberg has gotten a taste of the Internet’s wrath after posting a Photoshopped picture of Jenner, who is currently transitioning into a woman, wearing a DVF dress.

“Bruce Jenner … you are the woman you wanted to be!” von Furstenberg, 68, captioned the Photoshop job, which portrayed Jenner’s face on a famous photograph of the designer herself in the 1970s. (The Instagram has been removed; you can see it here.) “I salute your strength, courage and honesty. By speaking out, you have spoken for so many who suffer … Love Diane.” She also tagged his stepdaughter Kim Kardashian and daughter Kendall Jenner in the post.

Despite the seeming good intentions, the Internet pounced on the photo, criticizing it for being insensitive. Von Furstenberg hasn’t addressed the controversy directly, but she issued this statement to PEOPLE: “I admire Bruce Jenner’s strength, courage and honesty and have so much respect for him using his voice to speak for people who have none. I wish him nothing but a lifetime of happiness.”
