Don Lemon erupts on Sen. Tim Scott for comparing 'woke supremacy' to white supremacy
On CNN Tonight With Don Lemon Wednesday, Lemon was unable to control his emotions as he absolutely unloaded on South Carolina Sen. Tim Scott, the only Black Republican in the Senate, who appeared on Fox News on Tuesday and said, “Woke supremacy is as bad as white supremacy.” Lemon had a hard time finding the words at first, but began speaking calmly as he listed a handful of ways in which white supremacists differ from “woke” individuals.
“I’ve never seen a woke supremacist lynching anybody,” Lemon said. “Never saw a woke supremacist denying anybody access to housing or a job or education or voting rights. Never saw any woke supremacists enslaving anybody. Never saw any woke supremacists trying to keep people from marrying amongst different races.”
But the rage boiled over as Lemon reminded Scott that many who took part in the Capitol insurrection on Ja. 6 have white supremacy ties. Many, as Lemon pointed out, were wearing clothes with white supremacist symbolism.
“I didn’t see any woke supremacists storming the … blanking Capitol,” Lemon said. “Where are the woke supremacists attacking police? Where are the woke supremacists hunting police officers in the halls of the Capitol and beating them with Blue Lives Matter signs, with white supremacist insignias on their shirts and carrying white supremacist paraphernalia? Guess who I saw. Guess who police officers were beaten by. Guess who wanted to hang the vice president. White supremacists, Tim Scott! What are you doing?! The only Black Republican, were the woke supremacists carrying the Confederate battle flag in the nation’s Capitol, Tim Scott? Tim!”
At one point, Lemon was seemingly told not to yell by his producer, but he replied, “I have to. I know you don’t want me to yell, but this is ridiculous.”
Lemon went on to accuse Scott of purposely misinforming Americans.
“You are gaslighting people. You are giving people misinformation,” Lemon said. “What are you doing, brother? What are you doing? What are you doing? You’re not helping.”
It likely didn’t help that the Tim Scott story was sandwiched between two other stories involving GOP legislators and what Lemon called, “some really shameful statements about race.”
First, there was Rep. Glenn Grothman (R-WI) saying on the House floor, “I know the strength that Black Lives Matter had in this last election. I know it’s a group that doesn’t like the old fashioned family.”
Then there was Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), who appeared on Fox News Tuesday and compared loan forgiveness included in the COVID relief bill for minority farmers to reparations.
Lemon later accused Scott of coming up with a catchy buzz phrase so he can stay in office and stay in power.
