Donald Sutherland Dead at 88

Donald Sutherland, the star of countless beloved works, has died. He was 88.

CAA Media Finance, of which his son Roeg Sutherland is an executive, confirmed the tragic news to Deadline, revealing that the legendary actor passed in Miami on Thursday, June 20, after battling a long, unspecified illness.

In his upcoming memoir Made Up, But Still True, which is set for release on Nov. 12, the Outbreak actor opened up about his near-fatal battles with infantile paralysis, rheumatoid fever and spinal meningitis as a kid, though it's unclear at this time if they left him with any lasting impact that may have led to his passing.

Son Kiefer Sutherland quickly broke his silence on his father's passing, calling him "one of the most important actors in the history of film" who had "a life well lived."

After overcoming his myriad childhood illnesses, he began acting on screen in the '60s, scoring a small role in The Dirty Dozen before hitting it big as Hawkeye in the film version of M.A.S.H.

Throughout his career, he'd star in hits such as National Lampoon's Animal House, the film version of Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Outbreak, Pride & Prejudice, The Hunger Games series, and more.

Despite his illustrious career, he only ever won an honorary Academy Award for his career achievements, rather than for his work on any given film, and only racked up one Emmy and two Golden Globes.

He remained incredibly active up until the year before his death, with three releases in 2023: a film called Miranda's Victim, a children's flick called Ozi: Voice of the Forest, and his final production, a mini-series called Lawmen: Bass Reeves.

Sutherland's final project-to-be was Heart Land, which is still listed in pre-production on IMDb. He was cast as Rick.

In addition to Roeg and Kiefer, he is survived by sons Rossif and Angus, daughter Rachel, wife Francine, and four grandchildren.

His family will be holding a private celebration of life.
