Donald Trump fires back at Debra Messing after she slams his Hollywood fundraiser: 'How times have changed'
Donald Trump is fighting back after Debra Messing and Will & Grace co-star Eric McCormack spoke out against an upcoming Hollywood fundraiser being held in his honor.
Both actors called for the celebrities attending the Sept. 17 event to be named and shamed so, as McCormack put it, “the rest of us can be clear about who we don’t wanna work with.” Though it’s unclear who will be attending the fundraiser, celebrities like Jon Voight, Scott Baio and Kristy Swanson are among those who have publicly endorsed him.

Hey, @THR, kindly report on everyone attending this event, so the rest of us can be clear about who we don’t wanna work with. Thx. https://t.co/7W3xPG3bI2

Some accused the Will & Grace stars of supporting a Joseph McCarthy-style blacklist, while Trump merely seems amused that Messing is now a critic. According to a tweet sent by the president on Sunday morning, the actress “profusely thanked me” for, he claims, boosting NBC’s ratings with The Apprentice.
I have not forgotten that when it was announced that I was going to do The Apprentice, and when it then became a big hit, helping NBC’s failed lineup greatly, @DebraMessing came up to me at an Upfront & profusely thanked me, even calling me “Sir.” How times have changed!

Trump’s tweet riled up plenty of people. While one POTUS supporter slammed Messing and McCormack as “Hollywood hypocrites,” many were upset that Trump was spending time on a celebrity squabble rather than focusing on Saturday’s mass shooting in Texas.

I am sure Americans all along the coast are demanding @DebraMessing call Trump Sir. The baby recovering from a gunshot wound in Texas too. All she and her family can think about today is how respectful actress Debra Messing should be to Trump.

THIS is where your mind is? With a cheezy tv show from the past- while America reels from another mass shooting and Cat 5 hurricane hits the Bahama, the Florida, the Carolinas & Georgia. Huge climste change rally at https://t.co/7iGyfMhxUM. People are in the present without you.

. @realdonaldtrump- @DebraMessing has always been a class act. She treated you with respect when you were worthy of it. Times have changed. You are no longer worthy of it. Stop harassing your fellow citizens with your childish bullying. https://t.co/ZQb43aoLjy

In addition to being an outspoken critic of the president, Messing has famously gone toe to toe with fellow actress Susan Sarandon over their political differences.
On Sunday afternoon she responded to Trump’s message by shaming him for not attending to more important matters.
Update, 5 p.m.: This article has been updated with Messing’s response.
