Drake, Cher, and Céline Shine at Billboard Music Awards
The 2017 Billboard Music Awards were jam-packed with amazing performances from the world’s biggest stars. Cher, Céline Dion, Miley Cyrus, Drake, and many more took the stage to give the people at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas a show worthy of Sin City. Nicki Minaj started off the evening with a medley of songs, and she got a lil’ help from Lil’ Wayne and Jason Derulo. Nicki dominated the stage in dominatrix-type attire and showed off some NSFW dance moves.
Record night for Drake
Drake was the big winner of the night as he took home a record 13 awards! He just beat out Adele, who got 12 in 2012 from her 21 album. Drake was definitely feeling the love, and earlier in the night, he shared that love with others, including the evening’s cohost, Ludacris. Drake said, “Ludacris, I know we haven’t always seen eye-to-eye. I have a lot of love for you, and I want to say that while I’m still here.” But Drake wasn’t just giving out warm fuzzies and accepting awards, he also put on a dazzling performance in the middle of the Bellagio fountain.
All-star performances
There were tons of great performances on the night. Lorde put on a karaoke performance as she sang the lyrics to “Green Light” off of a lo-fi karaoke screen. And relatively green artists Julia Michaels and Halsey showed why they will soon be headliners with a couple of solid performances. And Miley Cyrus showed why she’s been headlining for a long time when she hit the stage for a simple, emotional performance of her new single “Malibu.”
Emotional moments
Miley tearing up wasn’t the only emotional moment of the night, though. Imagine Dragons frontman Dan Reynolds honored Chris Cornell, who committed suicide last week, with a moment of silence. But the moment didn’t seem long enough for the amount of impact Cornell had on the music industry. Another emotional moment had plenty to it as Sean “Diddy” Combs came out onstage and wished the Notorious B.I.G. a happy 45th birthday. Combs also showed a clip of Biggie’s mom giving a speech at the Billboard Awards shortly after the rapper’s death, previewed a clip of the new Bad Boy documentary and brought out Biggie’s son, CJ Wallace. CJ delivered a message from his family, saying, “I know my father is looking down on all of us tonight, and all of this love and support. My sister and I carry on his name with tremendous pride, and live my life by his words.”
Cher and Céline steal the show
A couple of music legends also performed. Céline Dion celebrated the 20th anniversary of Titanic with a stunning performance of “My Heart Will Go On.” And at the end of the night, Cher hit the stage for a couple of songs, including her massive hit “Turn Back Time.” Cher sported her iconic big curly hair, leather jacket, and sheer one-piece. The 71-year-old singer also accepted the Billboard Icon Award and reminded everyone that she’s still got it. After saying that she just turned 71, Cher said, “And I can do a five-minute plank, OK? Just saying.”
