Edgar Wright’s ‘Baby Driver’ Off and Running
Edgar Wright – the writer-director responsible for smart, visually inventive, and hilarious films like Shaun of the Dead, Scott Pilgrim vs. the World, and The World’s End – is officially behind the camera again.
Shooting on his new feature, Baby Driver, began earlier this week, a fact that Wright announced to the world via Twitter.

Not much is known about the plot of the film, which stars Ansel Elgort, Lily James, Jon Hamm, and Jamie Foxx. According to this Hollywood Reporter story, it focuses on a near-mute with an ear condition who “relies on the beat of his personal soundtrack to be the best in the game” and eventually gets mixed up in a heist that “threatens his life, love and freedom.” So it sounds a little like Drive with a Wright sensibility.
As Collider notes, that plot description – as well as the image of the guy wearing headphones on the movie’s slate, and Wright’s recently Instagrammed trips to the record store – suggest music will be an important element in the film, as is often the case in Wright’s work. Actors doing some of their own driving appears to be on the agenda as well, if recent videos posted by Elgort and co-star Eiza Gonzalez are any indication.
A Wright project is always noteworthy, but this one may be more closely watched since Baby Driver marks his first movie since he walked away from Ant-Man in 2014. Even now, Wright can’t totally escape Marvel; Baby Driver is currently shooting in Atlanta, the same city where Guardians of the Galaxy 2 also just began production.
