Elisabeth Moss agrees anti-abortion laws are like 'The Handmaid's Tale': 'It's an apt comparison'

Star of The Handmaid’s Tale, Elisabeth Moss, dropped by The View on Wednesday, and the panel wasted no time turning the conversation political.

Co-host Whoopi Goldberg noted, “The Handmaid’s Tale takes place in a dystopian future where women have no control of their bodies. Many people, including 2020 presidential candidate Kamala Harris and other politicians, have compared the show to the new wave of anti-abortion laws in the country.” Goldberg then turned the spotlight on Moss as she asked the actress, “Good comparison? Not so good? Your opinion?”

“I think it’s an apt comparison,” Moss replied. “It’s not just in our country, it’s in many places in the world. We don’t put anything in the show that hasn’t happened somewhere.”

Co-host Joy Behar also brought up the recent trend of wearing the iconic red Handmaid dress and bonnet to protests, noting, “They wore them at the Kavanaugh hearings, they wear them at pro-lifer things. It’s very, very interesting that those caught on right now when we need them.”

Said Moss, “There’s no mistaking what it means when you see it. It’s pretty ‘and this is where that person stands.’ We’re flattered by that but are also impressed by it as well.”

Behar took the opportunity to compare the red outfits to another now-iconic red garment used to show off the wearer’s political affiliation. “It’s like the MAGA hat. You know where they stand,” said the panelist.

Viewers on Twitter were thrilled to see Moss acknowledge the correlations people have made between the oppressive environment depicted in The Handmaid’s Tale and the current political climate, and agreed the two are eerily similar:
