Ella Travolta Remembers Mom Kelly Preston in New 'Little Bird' Music Video: 'I Felt Her Watching Over Me' (Exclusive)
Travolta dropped her new single "Little Bird" — and its accompanying music video — on Friday, Sept. 6
Throughout her grieving process, Ella Travolta found solace in music. Now, she's ready to share her experience in hopes of helping others feel less alone.
Travolta released her new single "Little Bird" on Friday, Sept. 6, and PEOPLE has the exclusive premiere of its accompanying music video. The track — which she considers her most personal song to date — will be featured on her upcoming EP Colors of Love.
"I grew up very much so in the public eye. And with that comes a lot of attention, especially when you lose someone," Ella, 24, who's the daughter of John Travolta and the late Kelly Preston, tells PEOPLE. "There's definitely the natural support and global support that comes with that."
She adds, "But then, there can be a natural input and expectation of how you should feel or how people assume that you feel or how other people feel, that gets added in."
By listening to the outside noise, Travolta found herself unable to process her grief. "Little Bird" — which was the last song she wrote for the EP — was her finally listening to her inner monologue and focusing on what matters most: her memories.

"['Little Bird' is] about holding onto those pure relationships that you have with people that you lost and really just listening to yourself and staying true to that relationship with that person," she says. "It's sort of the viewpoint of a mama bird talking to a baby bird and just not letting any other interference get in between it, because your true instincts were there all along."
"It had been a couple years, obviously, since my mom's passing, so I could look at the whole situation and take a step back from it and see what I wanted to communicate on it and what I wanted to communicate to her and what I was feeling in general," Travolta adds. "So that's sort of where I was on this, and that then completed the EP and it felt really good."
The little bird she references in the song has a deeper meaning, too. Preston would feel the presence of people she had lost through birds, Travolta says. Later, when Travolta was recorded her EP, she found herself noticing the birds around her and experienced that same feeling.
"I definitely felt her watching over me," she says of Preston, who died July 12, 2020 after a breast cancer diagnosis. "I knew that she was really proud of this whole process and of me."
For the music video, Travolta dug up several family home videos featuring her dad, 70, Preston, and her 13-year-old brother Benjamin.
For Travolta, the video is a "big compilation of some of my favorite memories," and she "wanted it to be as real and personal as possible."
"I really wanted it to also be a celebration of life," she says. "I think that's so important, even when you lose someone, for it to be a celebration of their life [because] you got the chance to be with that person for as long as you did and you got to have these memories."

Travolta doesn't take life for granted and emphasizes "how amazing it can be." Growing up, her parents had "such an amazing ability to make life so fun and so exciting," she says.
"Whether it's doing arts and crafts or playing a board game, everything was heightened to the max of the most fun you can have, just because of the life that they brought to it," Travolta adds.
Looking back, what Travolta admires most about her mom was her ability to put together a "beautiful dinner table" and "make every holiday super special." Having this foundation inspires Travolta to strive to keep that joy present in her life.
"My parents are such a huge inspiration for a lot of things and how I lead my life," she says.
"Little Bird" is the first release off of Travolta's upcoming EP Colors of Love. She previously released singles "Dizzy" and "No Thank You."
