Elle Fanning Channels 1950s Glamour in Givenchy Dress for Oscars 2025 Red Carpet
Elle Fanning brought classic elegance to the Oscars 2025 red carpet on Sunday in Los Angeles. The actress styled a custom haute couture look, with references to the design house’s early 1950s collection.
For the occasion, Fanning wore a custom white couture dress from Givenchy. Designed by Sarah Burton, the dress is made in French Lyon lace and silk tulle with a molded corset and Watteau caped back. The red carpet look also features a black grosgrain bow belt.

Fanning’s custom gown is inspired by Hubert de Givenchy’s first collection from 1952. The design marks Burton’s first custom haute couture look for the red carpet since joining the French luxury fashion house in September 2024.
The “A Complete Unknown” star’s dress was accessorized with shimmering jewelry pieces courtesy of Cartier. As for her glam, Fanning’s blond ‘do was styled in a tight chignon with a middle part, while her makeup featured bold brows, a winged eye and neutral lip. Fanning’s look was curated by stylist Samantha McMillen, who’s also collaborated with Fanning’s sister, Dakota.
Prior to her appointment as the creative director of Givenchy, Burton spent the formative years of her fashion career at Alexander McQueen. “Sarah Burton is an exceptional creative talent whose work I have passionately followed for many years. I am very glad that she is joining Givenchy today,” Sidney Toledano, chairman of the Givenchy board, said in a statement shared with WWD in September 2024.
“Her unique vision and approach to fashion will be invaluable to this iconic maison, known for its audacity and haute couture,” he continued. “I am convinced that her creative leadership will contribute to the future success and international standing of the maison.”
The 97th Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars, takes place on Sunday at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Conan O’Brien is hosting the ceremony, honoring the best in cinema from the past year. Notable presenters include Halle Berry, Penélope Cruz, Scarlett Johansson, Oprah Winfrey, Cillian Murphy, Emma Stone and more.
