Ellen DeGeneres says she ‘got kicked out of show business’ in the trailer for her final Netflix stand-up special

Ellen DeGeneres has had a weird few years.

In 2020, as she prepared to wind down her long-running, Emmy-winning talk show, she suddenly went from being one of Hollywood’s most beloved celebrities to being one of its most criticized when BuzzFeed reported that “The Ellen DeGeneres Show” had a toxic workplace culture allegedly rife with bullying and discrimination. She was personally accused of being mean, which directly conflicted with her public image as a nice person who signed off every show with “be kind to one another.”

And now, she’s ready to talk about it, in what she’s describing as her final stand-up special.

DeGeneres has kept a low profile since the talk show ended in 2022, but she’s stepping back out with “For Your Approval,” which arrives on Netflix on September 24. In the trailer, she addresses her reputational reversal with her trademark ironic humor. “Had I ended my show with ‘go f–k yourselves,’ people would have been pleasantly surprised to find out I’m kind.”

The comedian is already taking some heat in the comments section and on social media for claiming she “got kicked out of show business” while she films a Netflix special.

“For Your Approval” is DeGeneres’ second Netflix stand-up special, following 2018’s “Relatable,” which at the time was her first special in 15 years. She claims “For Your Approval” will be the last stand-up special of her career. When the special, was announced, DeGeneneres said, “To answer the questions everyone is asking me- Yes, I’m going to talk about it. Yes, this is my last special. Yes, Portia really is that pretty in real life.”

DeGeneres has won 33 Daytime Emmys over the course of her career, including four wins for Outstanding Daytime Talk Show Host, and one Primetime Emmy, for Outstanding Writing for Comedy Series, for the episode of “Ellen” in which her character comes out. She has hosted the Oscars, Emmys, and Grammys several times each. She received the honorary Carol Burnett Award at the Golden Globes and the Mark Twain Prize for American Humor for her contributions to comedy.
