‘Emilia Pérez’ sets the record for the most Oscar nominations for an international film
Emilia Pérez has set a new Oscar precedent for an international film with 13 nominations, breaking the record held by Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000) from Taiwan, and Roma (2018) from Mexico, both with 10. Emilia Pérez‘s huge nomination haul was only one away from tying the all-time Oscar record set by All About Eve (1950), Titanic (1997), and La La Land (2016).
The Netflix crime musical is about a cartel kingpin (Karla Sofía Gascón) who, with the help of a small-time lawyer (Zoe Salda?a), tries to begin a new life after going through a gender transition. Here are all the nominations the movie received on Jan. 23, including acclaimed filmmaker Jacques Audiard as the director and writer.

SEE‘Emilia Pérez,’ ‘The Brutalist,’ and ‘Wicked’ lead 2025 Oscar nominations: See the full list
The Spanish-language movie made in France has been shattering records all across this awards season. It became the most nominated comedy/musical film at the Golden Globe Awards with 10 bids and walked away with the most wins of the night, nabbing Best Comedy/Musical Film, Best Non-English Language Film, Best Supporting Actress for Salda?a, and Best Song for “El Mal.”
Since then, it has had one of the leading tallies at all of the major industry precursors, including 10 nominations at the Critics’ Choice Awards, three at the Screen Actors Guild Awards, and 11 at the BAFTA Awards. Gascón also makes history as the first openly transgender performer nominated at the Oscars, as the title character.
Not only has it cracked the double digits and achieved the highest number of mentions garnered for an international movie, it also has the potential to tie and perhaps the break the number of wins, currently held by four films: Sweden’s Fanny and Alexander (1982), Taiwan’s Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon (2000), South Korea’s Parasite (2019), and Germany’s All Quiet on the Western Front (2022), each with four victories.
Of those four, Parasite is the only film with a Best Picture statue, but Emilia Pérez is one of the top contenders for that prize and with its Golden Globe victory on its back, it has the opportunity to join the South Korean thriller for the coveted honor. Furthermore, its additional wins at the Globes can easily translate to Oscar triumphs in those respective categories, which would tie the record, most notably Best International Film as all four aforementioned films took home that prize as part of its haul. One more and it would become the most awarded international movie in the history of the Academy Awards. The 97th Academy Awards, hosted by Conan O’Brien, will take place on March 2.
